Year one of the Pedro Cerrano Invitational is heading for its finish line, and a first-ever champion will be crowned next week. The semifinals delivered two nail-biters, and now two underdogs—the Cavemen and the Fat Boys—are the last teams standing.
Cavemen Club the Top Seed
The Michiana Cavemen pulled off the upset of the season, knocking out top-seeded New Mexico Roadrunners in an exciting 6–5 semifinal. Michiana’s offense led the way with 40 runs, 9 home runs, and 8 steals, while the pitching staff delivered a sharp 2.55 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. The Roadrunners pushed back with 27 RBIs to 26 and 4 saves to 3, keeping the matchup alive until the very end. Nearly every category swung on a razor-thin margin, but the Cavemen held just enough ground to send the regular-season juggernaut home and advance to their first PCI Championship.
Fat Boys Roll Past ‘Dillos
The Gallagher Gulch Fat Boys joined them in the final with a 5–3 win over the Austin Armadillos, another matchup where the numbers tell the story of a close series. Both teams hit 7 homers and swiped 6 bases, and tied in saves (zero, by the way), while the Armadillos had the edge in WHIP (1.17 to 1.25) and K/BB ratio. But the Fat Boys claimed runs (32 to 28), batting average (.274 to .234), ERA (4.46 to 4.50), and pitching wins (5 to 4), each by the narrowest of margins. For the second straight week, Gallagher Gulch leaned on depth and small advantages to survive and advance.
The Stage is Set
The championship matchup is here, and it won’t feature the top seeds. Instead, the 5-seed Cavemen and 6-seed Fat Boys will battle for the crown, each riding back-to-back upsets through the bracket. Both proved they can win tight games decided by inches. Now only one can finish the Cinderella run and go down in history as the very first PCI champion.
Fun Bit of Trivia!
The Cavemen are piloted by Kyle, who’s in his very first year of fantasy baseball. On the other side, the Fat Boys are helmed by Willie B, the league’s most seasoned owner, playing the game since 1984. It’s a true rookie-versus-veteran showdown!
